Amazon revives 9.7-inch Kindle DX e-reader after eight-month hiatus

updated 02:59 pm EDT, Wed June 5, 2013

Large-scale ebook reader returns to Amazon store

Amazon has brought its large-scale e-reader back on sale, after an eight-month absence. The Kindle DX, quietly discontinued by the retailer last October, has appeared back on the company's ebook-device roster, with the e-ink slate seemingly retaining all of the specifications and features that it had before its removal.

The Kindle DX uses a 9.7-inch, 1200x824-pixel, 16-gray level E Ink Pearl display, and offers 3.3GB of free storage on its 4GB drive. Its battery is capable of lasting for up to one week with the wireless on from a 4.5-hour charge, and is able to connect over Wi-Fi, USB 2.0, and its free lifetime 3G connection. While it makes a return to the store in its original form, there is not an option to have the Kindle DX with the backlit Paperwhite screen.

At the time of its discontinuation, Amazon removed the Kindle DX after a period where it did not advertise nor update the e-reader for some time. The switchover from e-readers to tablets seemed to affect the Kindle DX's popularity, and was dumped from the store without fanfare. The Verge reports that Amazon vice president Jay Marine claimed the company would not abandon the Kindle DX, but it was "pretty much done with it."

Amazon has listed the Kindle DX at $299, the same price it had when it was removed from sale.
