Samsung launches ruggedized Galaxy S4 Active with waterproofing

updated 05:46 am EDT, Wed June 5, 2013

Dust, water-proof smartphone has 'Aqua Mode' for 8MP camera

Samsung has launched the rumored ruggedized version of its flagship smartphone. The Galaxy S4 Active is a fully sealed device with IP67 certified protection from dust and water, can be submerged to a depth of 1 meter (3.2ft) for 30 minutes, and has been constructed to be able to withstand impacts better than the original S4.

The five-inch full HD TFT LCD screen has a pixel density of 443ppi, and added "Glove Touch" to match its outdoor credentials. Inside is a quad-core 1.9GHz processor with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable memory, a rear 8-megapixel camera with LED flash, a front-facing 2-megapixel version, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, USB 2.0, and a 2,600mAh, with most specifications matching its predecessor, except for the camera.

Software-wise, the Galaxy S4 Active has the same suite of apps as the Galaxy S4, but with a few slight changes. The volume key can now be used to load the camera or turn the LED flash into a torch, while the camera now has an "Aqua Mode" which adjusts the image for underwater shots.

The US and Sweden will receive the Galaxy S4 Active first this summer, which will be available in a choice of gray, blue, and orange. Pricing was not disclosed, but it is likely to be similar to the Galaxy S4.
