Wikipad gaming tablet launch dated for June 11 release in US, UK

updated 12:08 pm EDT, Tue June 4, 2013

Gaming tablet is bundled with controller, includes PlayStation Mobile store

The Wikipad Android tablet for gaming will be going on sale in the US next week. The tablet, which uses an optional docking controller and recently passed through the FCC for certification, will be released in the United States and the United Kingdom from June 11th, which will then be followed by a "global launch planned for this summer."

Inside the Wikipad is a quad-core Tegra 3 with 1GB of RAM. Running on Android 4.1, the Wikipad has a seven-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1280x800, 16GB of storage expandable by microSD, and a front-facing 2-megapixel camera. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS is also included, along with additional microphone and headphone ports, stereo speakers, microUSB, and micro-HDMI, all powered by a 4100mAh battery. The additional controller dock provides four main buttons, a directional pad, and dual analog control sticks.

Aside from games on the Google Play store, the Wikipad also offers more games through Sony's PlayStation Mobile store, though there is no word on if it will be gaining support for Gaikai or PlayStation Cloud in the future, despite a previous deal. It faces stiff competition from other Android gaming systems, such as the similar Nvidia Shield, Razer Edge, and Kickstarter-project Ouya, so the addition of the PlayStation Mobile and Gaikai could give it an edge over the others.

The Wikipad will go on sale for $249 in stores at launch, and will be bundled with the controller dock.
