Foxconn, Mozilla announce Firefox OS partnership, teases tablet

updated 12:31 pm EDT, Mon June 3, 2013

Foxconn manufacturing five devices for unnamed OEM

Foxconn has signed a deal with Mozilla to put the Firefox OS mobile operating system onto a number of mobile devices. The smartphones, to be manufactured by Foxconn on behalf of an unnamed OEM, are also accompanied by the companies showing off a prototype tablet, one that was hinted at in a report last week.

The tablet, revealed in a press conference at Computex, is one of five devices being created for the OEM, reports The Next Web. Specifications of the tablet were not revealed at the time, but it was stressed that Foxconn would not become a brand itself, instead opting to remain as the manufacturer.

A statement in a Mozilla blog post also confirms the partnership, which will see Foxconn "extending past its origins in original design manufacturing to a combination of integrated software and hardware offerings." Young Liu, general manager at Foxconn's Innovation Digital System Business Group, is quoted as saying "Foxconn is executing on a vision of 'eight screens, one network, and one cloud' with all our strength."

The partnership with Mozilla is the latest development in Foxconn's attempt to secure its future. While it may appear that Apple is turning away from Foxconn for its iPhone production, the company has reportedly looked into producing its own line of accessories for devices.

Foxconn is not the latest company to partner with the fledgling Firefox OS. Other manufacturers, such as LG, ZTE, Alcatel, and Geeksphone have started work on their own devices, with some manufacturers already shipping handsets to developers.
