Eight-inch Galaxy Tab 3 adds 'reading mode' display optimization

Samsung has revealed another two devices in the Galaxy Tab 3 range. The Tab 3 8.0 and Tab 3 10.1, offering an 8-inch and 10.1-inch display respectively, come just one month after the manufacturer launched its 7-inch version, with both shipping "globally" from the beginning of June, and later this year in the United Kingdom.

The Tab 3 8.0 is being billed as a potential e-book reader replacement, and includes a "reading mode" that optimizes the display for "paperlike readability." Inside is a 1.5GHz dual-core processor with 1.5GB of RAM driving the 1280x800 display, while storage options of 16GB and 32GB can be upgraded by up to 64GB via microSD. A five-megapixel rear camera is matched by a front-facing 1.3-megapixel version, and connectivity is provided by Wi-Fi including Channel Bonding and Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 2.0, and 3G and LTE.

Though the Tab 3 10.1 does not have a "reading mode," it still matches much of what the Tab 3 8.0 has to offer. The processor, rumored but not confirmed as one from Intel instead of an ARM-based version, is a dual-core 1.6GHz model with 1GB of RAM, a three-megapixel rear camera, and the same storage options. The display, connectivity, and Android 4.2 installation also match the Tab 3 8.0, but it has a larger 6,800mAh battery instead of the 4,450mAh power supply in the smaller version.

Samsung has not revealed pricing for the two tablets, but could do so at its London launch event later this month.
