Apple starts in-store iPhone 5 display replacements for $149

updated 04:21 pm EDT, Mon June 3, 2013

Attempt at saving cash on iPhone troubleshooting

Apple is now offering the option to have an iPhone 5 display replaced at an Apple Store for $149, says MacRumors. The service costs the same with or without AppleCare+. It may be most important for people without the plan, though, who otherwise have to pay $229 to have a non-defective iPhone replaced. With AppleCare+ active, a replacement is $49.

Screen replacement is believed to be just one of a number of AppleCare policy changes taking effect in the next few months. By doing in-house repairs of iOS displays, Apple is expected to save as much as $1 billion or more per year. In the past the company has simply resorted to replacing broken hardware, which while a quick solution can deplete already limited stock at high expense.
