Apple, Warner Music have signed deal for iRadio, sources say

Apple allegedly racing to announce iRadio at WWDC

Over the weekend, Apple signed a new deal with Warner Music Group for recorded music and music publishing rights, say sources for the New York Times. The deal comes on top of one with Universal Music for recorded music. Apple is reportedly scrambling to secure new deals with the major labels, including Sony, so it can announce iRadio at WWDC, which starts on June 10th.

Previous reports have indicated that Apple has been working on a streaming music service for many months, with efforts extending back into 2012 if not earlier. The company has even allegedly been in a position to announce the service at several major events, but failed to secure deals with record labels in time.

The main obstacle is believed to be the payment terms Apple has been offering to music labels. Initially, at least, Apple is said to have avoided offering any advances, unlike Google, which extended some of its own in order to launch All Access. Apple may also have had to start from scratch in negotiations, since its service -- nicknamed iRadio -- is thought to use a format similar to Pandora, but with some more Spotify-like on-demand functions.
