Pioneer adds app-based remote control to XDJ-R1 DJ system

updated 04:32 am EDT, Fri May 31, 2013

App for iOS can control DJ deck functions over Wireless Direct

Pioneer has created a DJ system that can be controlled through an app. The XDJ-R1 can follow commands sent from a "remotebox" app on an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch over Wireless Direct, allowing the DJ to move around a venue and still have control over most of the deck's functions. This includes controlling the volume levels, playlist management, and the ability to mix songs from a USB device.

Music to be played can be supplied through two CD players and a USB port, and is able to play music stored as MP3, WAV, AAC, and AIFF files on a CD-R or USB drive, or alternatively normal CDs. The XDJ-R1 adds in a number of features to help in mixing, including Hot Cues to play back music at specific points, automatic beat synchronization between tracks, an audio sampler, and various other audio effects. The XLR Master Out, Booth Out, Aux and mic ports are accompanied by MIDI support, allowing the deck to be used to operate DJ software on a computer.

Pioneer will ship the XDJ-R1 in June for $1099.
