HTC said to kill plans for 12-inch Windows RT slate

updated 11:05 pm EDT, Thu May 30, 2013

7-inch model allegedly still in the works

HTC has reportedly cancelled plans to release a 12-inch Windows RT tablet, based on weak market demand for the operating system, according to people familiar with the matter. The steep cost of development of the device is also named as a reason for the cessation, apart from low Windows RT consumer demand.

A report from Bloomberg cites the sources as saying that the expected charge for the tablet to consumers would likely be more than the market would bear. A 7-inch Windows RT tablet is said to still be in production, with lower costs for fabrication expected in the second half of 2013.

Microsoft's own halo Windows RT device, the Surface with Windows RT, has also been reported to be suffering from weak demand. Microsoft was criticized for its approach to Windows RT, having failed to clearly differentiate the operating system from Windows 8 while also deliberately hobbling the OS. The inability to run legacy Windows applications has also been cited as a major hurdle for the mobile OS.
