Carrier to offer home base station with two-hour talk time on battery

US Cellular is planning to provide a home phone service, using a base station that connects to the carrier's wireless network. The system, similar to the Home Phone Connect service provided by Verizon, will allow calls to be placed through a normal corded or cordless home phone attached to one of its two telephone ports, as an alternative to having a home phone line installed.

The base station will offer dual-band support over 800 and 1900MHz CDMA, and while it will be supplied with a charger, it will also have a 1,500mAh NiMH battery capable of providing up to two hours of talk time, and up to 36 hours of standby time, according to information provided to Engadget. As well as being supplied with an antenna, the base station will also notify of any waiting voice mail messages and the strength of the signal.

While a launch date is unknown, it has been revealed that US Cellular will be offering unlimited calls, caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding, and three-way calling as part of the $20 monthly subscription, but will not provide access to data.
