Microsoft updating Kinect for Windows motion sensor next year

updated 03:59 pm EDT, Thu May 23, 2013

New sensor to have improved camera, skeletal system

Microsoft will be releasing an updated version of its Kinect for Windows sensor next year. Following on from the launch of the Xbox One and its inclusion of a new Kinect interface, the add-on for computers will have a number of matching improvements and a new software development kit, thanks to its shared technology set with the console version.

The new sensor will use a high-definition color camera, according to a company blog post, which when combined with Microsoft's Time-of-Flight technology for measuring the return time of rebounding light photons to the sensor, is said to provide higher accuracy and precision. It will be capable of recognizing slight rotations of the wrist and wrinkles in clothing, while its improved skeletal tracking will monitor more points on the body than before, as well as tracking six skeletons at the same time.

It will also have an expanded field of view for the camera, in order to accommodate a wider array of room sizes, and an active-IR system will allow it to work in most lighting conditions. The built-in microphone array will be able to isolate noise and filter ambient sounds, improving its ability to pick up and understand voice commands, and is claimed to be able to do so in crowded rooms.

While a date for release has not been revealed by Microsoft, more details will be revealed during its Build 2013 developer event in June.
