Corning introduces Lotus XT Glass, aimed at high-res displays

updated 11:31 am EDT, Fri May 17, 2013

Lower-cost glass could be used for iOS, Android, other mobile devices

The maker of the Gorilla Glass used in iPhones and other mobile devices has unveiled its latest fusion-made, resilient glass for high-resolution displays. Corning, which is also continuing its Gorilla Glass line with a third version this year, officially introduced a "second-generation glass substrate" called Lotus XT Glass. The new variant features many of the properties of some of Corning's other products while being easier and cheaper to manufacture -- a fact that may persuade tech companies to use it in figure products.

Corning is pitching the Lotus XT substrate as being ideal for the latest display technologies, helping to build "faster, thinner, brighter and higher-resolution" displays that are also more energy efficient and immersive. "It's superb surface quality supports the backplane characteristics required for the vibrant colors and clarity [that today's] OLED and LCD transmissions are known for," the company says. The firm's products are widely employed in the smartphone and tablet field due to their resistance to damage, flexibility and low cost.

The company will be showcasing the new glass at a trade show in Vancouver next week, as well as highlighting its other glass products. Apple is thought to be planning on the forthcoming Gorilla Glass 3 for its next iOS devices, but Apple has never specified exactly what Corning product it uses. Given the iPhone maker's strong relationship with Corning, should Lotus XT be a better candidate for Apple's goals in its next devices, it might switch -- assuming the resiliency is at least as high as current Gorilla Glass.
