Google adds extra cards to Google Now, voice search to Chrome

Reminder cards, suggestions for media part of Google Now additions

Google Now, the predictive information service, has received a number of updates, in how it works and what it shows. The Google I/O attendees saw Google Now showing options for new cards, including ones for dedicated reminders, as well as activating voice recognition without pressing a button, and adding it to the Chrome browser.

Reminders can be set by asking Google Now to set one up, which it will then prompt for extra details, such as a time. Public transport data is now included, as well as cards for books and other media that could be of interest to the user.

Stating "OK Google" before asking a question will cause Google Now to start listening, functioning in a similar way to how Google Glass responds to "OK Glass." As before, Google Now will search through Google Knowledge Graph for an answer, with requests able to be personalized further, including scanning a user's Google Mail account. The buttonless Google Now searching will also extend to Chrome and Chrome OS, with users able to ask a question using the same "OK Google" prefix, and receiving a vocal response accompanied by more-traditional search results.

The voice-only search and new cards are working on Android now, as an update for the Google Search app. It was not mentioned when the extra cards will reach the iOS version, nor for Chrome to gain voice search.
