Microsoft rumored to cull Xbox Live Points currency, reveal at E3

New payment system to work on Xbox Live, Windows Store, Windows Phone Store

Microsoft may be scrapping its Points virtual currency in favor of local currency pricing, according to a report. The rumor, which has surfaced a few times in the past, is now bolstered with new claims that the new system would work across platforms, with Microsoft preparing to reveal it at the E3 game show later this year.

Sources of The Verge told of new gift cards that would work in a similar way to iTunes vouchers and other store-bought versions. Direct payments for goods or services by credit or debit cards will continue to be offered by the company, but it is not clear if the cards would be used per-transaction, or if the user will have to credit their account before making a purchase, just how the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live system currently operates.

The payment system will also work on much more than the Xbox 360 game console, with payment details and credit able to work on the Windows Store and Windows Phone Store as well. The timing of such a move is also apt, as the company is set to reveal its next generation of game console next week, making it an opportune time for Microsoft to make large changes that fundamentally impact their gaming service.
