Verizon briefly posts $100 pricetag for iPhone 5 [U]

updated 03:13 pm EDT, Wed May 15, 2013

May hint at upcoming discount

[Updated with Verizon confirmation] Earlier today, Verizon briefly posted a $100 pricetag for the 16GB iPhone 5 on its website this morning, a move the company later confirmed was a genuine offer, but only for select customers. The phone typically sells for $199 with a two-year contract, which was also a stipulation for the $100 cost. Verizon quickly reverted the price back to normal, and in response to inquiries would only say it doesn't discuss rumors.

The site error may lend credence to a rumor that Verizon is planning a $100 discount on the iPhone 5. Similar deals have been offered by Sprint and T-Mobile in recent weeks, if under special terms. T-Mobile, for instance, has since raised its base price for an iPhone 5 from $99 to $149.

Update: the $100 iPhone 5 offer is only for a specific group of customers, a Verizon spokesperson told AppleInsider. The promotional price will be offered to Verizon feature phone customers who are off-contract or within two months of being so. The promotion will not appear on Verizon's site, but instead appear only on the My Verizon pages of targeted customers. The $100 discount will come though a bill credit for customers who take the upgrade.
