Frostbite Go engine coming to iOS, Android

updated 08:26 pm EDT, Tue May 14, 2013

May carry over some Battlefield 4 technology

Games publisher EA is planning to bring the Frostbite engine to iOS and Android, according to the company's website. "One of our most exciting current projects is called Frostbite Go, a mobile division empowering EA game developers with Frostbite's proven excellent workflows and features to bring true Frostbite experiences to all major mobile platforms," the site's History page reads. Switching over to the This is Frostbite page, EA mentions "diverse targets from XBOX360 and PlayStation 4 to iOS and Android."

At the moment Frostbite is only used in Windows and console games published by EA, such as Battlefield 3, the Need for Speed series, and the upcoming Battlefield 4 (pictured). The engine is particularly known for its visual effects and physics, which can include destructible terrain. 9to5Mac notes that a January job listing hinted at Frostbite being ported to OS X as well.

Let's put this in context. That first sentence should read: "Games publisher EA, the company which has repeatedly proved that it can't manage its own servers, as with its recently-botched release of SimCity, and which constantly makes elementary and embarrassing programming mistakes, and which is consistently found to be the least-popular company in the tech industry and sometimes one of the least-popular companies in the world, is planning to bring the Frostbite engine to iOS and Android, according to the company's website."
