Report: HTC First sales terrible, facing discontinuation at AT&T

updated 06:00 pm EDT, Mon May 13, 2013

Ratings on Facebook Home app remain poor

According to reports, AT&T is considering discontinuing the two-month-old HTC First Facebook phone. Sources have claimed that in the short time the HTC handset has been available, less than 15,000 units nationwide were sold up to and including AT&T's $1 promotion for the device.

BGR claims that its trusted source says the $1 sale was a precursor to total discontinuation of the phone, with salespeople making "little if any effort to sell the handset to customers." HTC has paid to guarantee prime location of point-of-sale displays of the phone in the retail stores, and phone sales cannot be discontinued until after that date has passed.

AT&T has commented on the matter, saying that the company does "pricing promotions all the time, and have made no decisions on future plans." Electronista has spoken with an AT&T corporate staffer who does call the sales numbers on the phone "challenging to justify" the prospect of continuing sales, but stopped short of saying that the phone's days are numbered.

The Facebook Home experience itself -- revealed alongside the HTC First in a media event -- became available for download on April 12. Within hours of its release, 47.7 percent of its ratings were one-star ratings. Overall, Facebook Home had an average rating of 2.3, compared with 4.4 for Facebook Messenger and 3.6 for the full Facebook app, according to The Next Web.
