T-Mobile raises down payment price on iPhone 5

updated 03:55 pm EDT, Mon May 13, 2013

Promotional $99 down payment rises to $149 for 16GB model

The newest national carrier of the iPhone, T-Mobile, has ended a promotional "introductory price" period for the iPhone 5, raising the down payment from $99 to $149 for the 16GB model -- with similar $50 increases for the 32GB and 64GB models. Though it is still one of the cheapest ways to buy an iPhone 5 rather than buying a no-contract phone or going through a contract with one of the other carriers, the price difference with a T-Mobile plan is now down to about $20 less than buying the iPhone outright.

Not affected by the change in introductory pricing is is the is trade-in promotion, which allows users to bring in previous-generation iPhones and apply credit towards the iPhone 5, which could conceivably get the down payment down to zero, reports Tmo News. The company also offers "unlimited" options for talk, text and data, as well as greater-than-usual flexibility in changing plan options, since the plans are separated for the monthly payment towards the cost of the iPhone.

Contrary to some of T-Mobile's earlier "Uncarrier" branding, signing up for an iPhone 5 does obligate you to up to 24 months on T-Mobile's service at the standard monthly payment on the iPhone plus whatever package options for calling, text and data a user chooses. The carrier was forced to change some of its advertising after the Attorney General for Washington state found the original claims about "no annual contract" to be "deceptive."
