Google Fiber grows again: Gladstone, MO added to future buildouts

updated 11:52 pm EDT, Mon May 13, 2013

Announcement marks fifth recent reveal of fiber expansion

A brief posting on the Google Fiber blog has noted the addition of a new locality to Google Fiber. Gladstone, Missouri has voted to allow Google to expand its network to the city, a suburb of Kansas City. The new locality is Google's fifth announcement in a handful of weeks regarding expansion of its gigabit Internet service.

Google notes, as it did in previous announcements, that "it takes a while to plan, engineer, and start building our network in new communities, so it will still be some time before we can hook up our Gladstone customers" and promises more information as it is available. Pricing and services available are expected to be identical to other offerings in the area of Kansas City.

Google Fiber announcements have fired up interest in the ultra-fast service by other companies. While AT&T announced plans for a gigabit fiber network in Austin shortly after Google revealed their own proposal, CenturyLink is building its own pilot gigabit service in Omaha, according to a recent Omaha.com report. Vtel, an Internet service provider in Vermont, revealed during its fiber product launch that the creation of Google Fiber helped it receive stimulus funding to build its network.
