Offers paid additional storage, cross-platform compatibility
Amazon has launched an iOS version of its Cloud Drive Photos app (free), which gives users 5GB in free storage space for backing up or offloading photos taking up too much room on their own devices. Depending on the format of the pictures, the Amazon Cloud Drive Photos storage locker can hold up to thousands of photos, and the company offers additional storage space for a fee starting with 20GB of additional space for $10 per year. The iPhone-oriented app also allows sharing of photos to Facebook, Twitter and email.
Once uploaded, photos are available to view from a user's mobile device or any web browser, and users can upload pictures from their desktop computer as well. An Android version of the app is also available, making it possible for photos to be stored and shared from either platform. The app will also automatically upload new photos taken with the app rather than the default Camera application on the iPhone or iPod touch.
Users who need more space than the provided 5GB or even the 20GB for $10 per year offer can purchase 50GB for $25 per year, 100GB for $50 per year, 200GB for $100 per year, 500GB for $250 per year and a maximum of 100GB of storage for $500 per year. The app can also be used to store and share photos outside Apple's provided Camera Roll or Photo Stream offerings, making more total photos available for viewing or sharing provided there is an available internet connection.
