WSJ: Amazon working on two smartphones, one with glasses-free 3D

updated 03:15 pm EDT, Thu May 9, 2013

Audio-only streaming device also claimed as being developed

A report claims that Amazon is creating a number of devices, including two smartphones and an audio-only device said to be designed for streaming. Though there are little in the way of details for the gadgets, one of the two phones is said to use a screen capable of showing 3D images without the need to wear special glasses.

The smartphone will also have retina-tracking technology, according to sources of the Wall Street Journal, and will allow images to "float above the screen like a hologram and appear three-dimensional at all angles." It is claimed that the devices are part of a broader strategy into hardware, with the previously-rumored set-top box also set to join the current range of devices, which includes ebook readers and tablets. The new projects are allegedly known internally as Project A, B, C, and D, with the group being called the "Alphabet Projects."

The idea of Amazon creating a smartphone has been rumored numerous times before. Previously, it has been suggested that Amazon worked with Foxconn on such a device, and it would either a 4.7-inch or 5-inch display. Claims of an apparently confirmed smartphone launch ahead of a media event have also been proved wrong.
