Alleged Google Maps redesign suggests shift away from navigation

updated 07:36 am EDT, Wed May 8, 2013

Full-screen map images include recommendations from reviews, Google+

Google may be updating the Maps user interface in the future. Screenshots of the alleged interface upgrade shows a page where the sidebar, usually used for location searches and more information on routes and places, has been removed in favor of Google Now-inspired index cards on top of a full-screen map.

The new maps will also allow users to restrict search results in areas based on the recommendations of top reviewers or members of Google+ circles, according to the unofficial Google Operating System blog. The map itself has seemingly had some tweaks as well, matching the main design focus on the map itself rather than navigation elements, including new colors and revised symbols.

Though there is little in the way to show that this is a confirmed change for the future or an internal suggestion for what Maps could look like in the future, it is possible that a revised Google Maps may make an appearance at Google I/O next week.
