Microsoft updates Office 2011, adds Office365 compatibility

updated 07:30 pm EDT, Tue May 7, 2013

Patch fixes numerous bugs, requires OS X 10.5.8 or higher

A new update is available for Microsoft Office 2011, the most recent version of the widely-used office suite. Version 14.3.4 addresses numerous issues and bugs, adds a needed font for sharing documents, and most importantly further refines the interoperability of the Office 365 initiative, allowing the option for users to jump to the subscription version of Office if they want. In addition, the new version adds the built-in option of saving files to SkyDrive and SharePoint in Microsoft Word.

Version 14.3.4 requires both that the Mac be running OS X 10.5.8 or later, and that version 14.1.0 or a later version already be installed. Office Home Premium 365 requires an Intel Mac and OS X 10.6 or higher

It adds the Calibri Light font that was missing from the Mac version of Office, which could cause substitutions when sharing documents that use it with Windows users. It also fixes an issue in which all updates during a co-authoring session with the PowerPoint web app client could come through as conflicts, and squashes a bug that caused some users to be asked to reactivate the suite when multiple Mac Office applications were started on login.

In addition, Outlook for Mac will no longer prompt for credentials after the Kerberos token expires, fixes an issue where a folder name with leading white-space characters would be rejected by GMail accounts, and deprecates the XLIST command used by GMail. The update also resolves a problem where content in a MS PowerPoint 2013 (PC) document could be lost when saved in PowerPoint for Mac, and a related issue where keyboards and remotes may lose control in a PowerPoint for Mac slide show.

The update also addresses an issue where item searches in Outlook would continue in the background even if the user had cancelled the search, and a problem in which messages that are sent from an account that is present in the Blocked Sender list in Outlook for Mc are displayed in Junk Mail instead of Sent Items. A related issue was also resolved, in which the wrong senders were being blocked from certain kinds of accounts and account formatting in the Blocked Senders list under Junk Email Protection.

In addition to being downloadable from Microsoft's main support site, the update will also appear in Auto Update for Office 2011 version 14.1.0 or higher. Subscriptions for Microsoft Office 365 begin at $100 per year for the Home Premium edition, and offer the advantage of no additional costs for upgrades (even major ones), along with free cloud storage of documents and other benefits. Student discounts are available and quite substantial, as low as $80 for four years.
