Asus sells 3 million tablets in Q1, plots smaller Windows 8 tablets

updated 09:52 am EDT, Mon May 6, 2013

Earnings rise for seventh time in a row, eighth unlikely

Asus managed to sell 3 million tablets in the first quarter, offsetting a drop in sales of notebooks and computer parts, according to the company's latest quarterly results. Overall, the company managed to earn $3.5 billion in revenues for the quarter, with its $202 million quarterly profit an improvement compared to both year-on-year and the previous quarter by 5.8-percent.

Sales in the United States contributes to 23-percent of the company's revenues, according to Engadget, which is a year-on-year improvement of 17-percent. Despite being the seventh earnings rise in a row, Asus predicts flat sales in the next quarter, potentially bringing the financial run to an end.

Asus is also planning to release a smaller Windows 8 tablet later this year, reports the Wall Street Journal. The alleged plans for the smaller tablet falls in line with relaxed restrictions from Microsoft for Windows 8 tablets, and though its possible size is not listed, it could end up being similar in stature to the leaked 8.1-inch Acer tablet. Asus chief executive Jerry Shen suggested that Windows 8 tablets could fall below $300 this year, but did not offer a price for its own smaller Windows 8 tablet. Electronista recently tried out the Asus VivoTab Smart, a Windows 8 tablet with a 10.1-inch display and a $450 price tag, something which makes the prospect of a sub-$300 Windows 8 tablet with a smaller screen entirely possible.
