Mystery LG ‘phablet’ leaks out

updated 06:37 am EDT, Sun May 5, 2013

LG prepping new 'phablet,' but precious few other details so far

An LG 'phabet' has been leaked courtesy of @evleaks, although it remains a mystery at this point what it is and where it fits into LG's product line. The device looks similar to the 5.5-inch LG Optimus G Pro, which has just gone up for pre-order with AT&T. However, it is possible that it features a slightly larger display edge-to-edge display as it omits the home button found at the bottom of the Optimus G Pro. It also seems to omit physical buttons on the sides of the device as well.

LG is already said to be working with Google on a new Nexus device, possibly to be called the Nexus 5, which is expected to center on a 5-inch display. However, it is often the case that Nexus devices do not feature the manufacturer logo on the front of the device, as is the case with the newly leaked LG model in question. It can only be speculated as to whether the new device is an Optimus G variant, or a new device altogether.

LG has favored Qualcomm Snapdragon processors in some of its recent devices including the popular Nexus 4, which is fitted with a quad-core Snapdragon S4 clocked at 1.5GHz. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor clocked at 1.7GHz and matched with 2GB of RAM powers the LG Optimus G Pro 'phablet' headed to AT&T customers, while there is also a 1.9GHz version of the chip available to OEMs. We look forward to learning what LG has packaged in its latest device, with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 also a possibility.
