AT&T, Verizon to tackle prepaid phone service with new programs

updated 04:10 pm EDT, Fri May 3, 2013

Verizon program spawned from acquisition of developer ItsOn

Industry giants Verizon and AT&T are both looking at moving more aggressively into pay-as-you-go phone offerings. Carrier software developer ItsOn will be launching a consumer facing portal later this month, likely under the Verizon umbrella. Additionally, AT&T is readying its "All In One"-branded plan, likely supplementing -- rather than replacing -- the GoPhone network already in place.

ItsOn service hasn't been detailed, but flexible user-selected pricing is likely on the Verizon LTE network. Initial release of the service will likely be limited to Android smartphones, with a possible addition of iOS devices in the future.

AT&T's "All in One" network is likely to offer a $35 per month service tier for feature phones, with a $50 per month fee for smartphones. The brand is expected to offer unlimited talk and text in its feature phone plans, with the addition of a 2GB data allotment in the smartphone offering. A $70 per month plan is expected to boost data to 5GB.

US telecoms are lagging badly in this. I just came back for a short visit to the US, and it's extremely frustrating not to have a decent smartphone prepaid plan. For $29/mo in Australia, I get 1+ GB, plus credit I can convert into an additional 600MB, and more than enough voice minutes.

This is probably the result of a competitive market as well, not this duopoly of Verizon and AT&T.

It's about time the US carriers get a bit more aggressive with their pricing and compete a little, vs seemingly being in lockstep to charge the highest amount possible for the least amount of service.
