Acer guns for Nexus 7 with introduction of 7.9-inch Iconia A1

updated 02:33 pm EDT, Fri May 3, 2013

IPS display at 1024x768, 1.2GHz quad-core processor

Acer is taking on the Google Nexus 7 by shipping a budget-ranged Android tablet with a marginally bigger screen. Housing a larger-than-normal 7.9-inch IPS display running at a resolution of 1024x768, the Iconia A1 follows on the design aesthetic provided with the Iconia B1, shown earlier this year, measures just 0.44-inches thick and weighs in at 0.90 pounds.

Inside is a MediaTek quad-core processor running at 1.2GHz, and comes with options for 8GB or 16GB of storage, expandable by microSD. Connectivity is provided by Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi, with a 3G version expected in July, while the rear-facing 5-megapixel camera is capable of recording 1080p Full HD video. A front-facing webcam, micro-HDMI and microUSB 2.0 ports, and Acer's WakeApp feature to launch specific apps when the tablet is turned on is also included.

Acer plans to sell the 16GB version in the US for $200 in June, while the 8GB model will sell for $170.
