Google Glass to soon allow iPhone access to navigation, SMS messages

updated 03:51 pm EDT, Fri May 3, 2013

Features so far reserved for Android

iPhone owners with early access to Google Glass will soon also be able to use the glasses' navigation and text messaging features, a Google worker tells TechCrunch. Getting either function currently requires the official Android companion app. In the near future, though, Glass will be able to access them regardless of the device it's tethered to. Exact timing hasn't been mentioned.

The present generation of Glass hardware doesn't have its own cellular access; instead, it tethers to a phone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. It also pulls GPS data from the phone, though it does have its own compass sensor. Google has previously confirmed that Glass will support both iOS and Android.

Of course, new DMV regulations will not allow these glasses to be worn while driving. I see them as being as bad or worse than texting. DVD screens are already illegal in areas where the driver could see them so restricting these should be a no brainer. Of course you're not supposed to wear headphones while driving either because it significantly limits the driver's ability to hear anything other than the music (like emergency vehicle sirens). This won't stop many people from wearing them, however.

I mean it looks cool in the picture....it's like watching Sci-Fi movie. But wearing it in real life and walking with it into an office or social gathering, it just looks embarrassing.
