House, Senate gain live streaming, 'enhanced features' from YouTube

updated 04:23 pm EDT, Tue April 30, 2013

Offering replaces paid products from other companies

Google today announced that starting later this week, all US Congressional members will have access to YouTube channel "enhanced features." While no pertinent details have emerged from the search engine, the new permissions allows the elected officials to live stream video, much the same way that the State of the Union address was broadcast on the video streaming service.

A letter from the Committee on House Administration sent to House members says that it has "worked with YouTube to enable their live streaming technology within the House network" which allows "members to communicate with constituents in real time at no cost."

A similar letter to senators calls the move "an opportunity for your constituents to watch your official events remotely and in real time" and also notes that the service is free. Both letters address competitive services which come with a fee, such as UStream, being replaced by the new offering.
