App-based messaging overtakes SMS texting for first time ever

Research company Informa says that app-based messaging -- such as Apple's own Messages app or the popular What'sApp for mobile devices -- has surpassed traditional SMS-based text messaging for the first time. While SMS usage will continue to thrive, particular as long as "feature phones" remain viable in less-affluent markets, non-SMS messaging should reach 50 billion per day by 2014 -- more than double the projected level of 21 million SMS messages by the same year.

The company reported that chat apps averaged 19 billion messages per day in 2012, edging ahead of the 17.6 billion SMS texts averaged per day. In part, the move to chat-based messaging has been led by a desire to avoid the mass-advertising, scams and other unwanted text messages that plague SMS, along with the convenience of being able to message any device from any other device using the same service, such as what Facebook and Apple's Messages services offer. Businesses, however, strongly prefer SMS for the revenue it provides, around $115 billion in 2012 alone and expected to reach $127 billion by 2016.

Adobe holds Mother's Day Sale on Lightroom, Photoshop Elements, more

Adobe will be offering discounts on some of its most widely-known software, using the Mother's Day holiday as an excuse for a sale. Each of the sale programs take $30 off their retail price. Pro photography management program Lightroom 4.4, which was only recently updated, will sell for $119 during the sale, while photo-editing app Photoshop Elements 11 and video-editing app Premiere Elements 11 will cost just $69 each, or users can purchase both in a bundle for $119. The sale pricing is activated by adding the promotional code "SPRING30" at checkout. Adobe's pro applications are not part of the sale, which ends May 11.

Rumor says Boost Mobile will carry iPhones starting in Q3

A claim by a reliable source has told AppleInsider that Sprint-owned MVNO Boost Mobile will begin selling the iPhone beginning sometime over the summer. While Sprint has had the current iPhone models for some time, this would be the first time the urban-marketed Boost would carry the iPhone. Currently unknown is the exact date, which models would be offered and pricing or plan points. A previous rumor from about a year ago claimed that Boost would begin carrying the iPhone in September of 2012, but the source of the rumor -- a Twitter post from @evleaks -- is considered more reliable based on his previous track record.
