HTC: Galaxy S4 reviews are helping us out

updated 02:21 pm EDT, Sun April 28, 2013

Samsung's design stumble is HTC's gain

A large number of tech press reviews of Samsung's Galaxy S4 have noted that it's design is inferior to HTC's premium-feeling One, and that would appear to be paying off for HTC. The manufacturer's North American president recently told Business Insider that the knocks on Samsung's design ethic are drawing the right kind of attention to HTC just when the company needs it most.

"We look at [the Galaxy S4 reviews] through the lens of the HTC One, and it stands up positively," Mike Woodward, HTC's North America president, told Business Insider. "The design seems to be attracting the most attention and we're really proud of that."

Faced with worsening financial returns in light of Samsung's dominance of the Android handset market, HTC went with an aluminum unibody design for the One and has been touting the device's build quality. Samsung, observers note, largely refined the design of its Galaxy S3 for the S4, sticking with the same plastic build and focusing more on software.

Woodward says HTC's gamble has paid off so far.

"It's been a really great week for us," Woodward said. "We're seeing brisk sales so far."

Thanks to a massive marketing campaign and the popularity of the Galaxy S3, Samsung's follow-up has launched to long lines in many locations. The device's Australian launch, though, appears to have been hit by shipping delays.
