Nokia Chat released as beta for Asha, Lumia devices

updated 02:10 pm EDT, Thu April 25, 2013

Instant messenger connects to Yahoo, adds location broadcasting

Nokia has updated its instant-messaging service for Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 8-based Lumias and Asha smartphones. Previously used on Symbian and Series 40 devices before being replaced by Ovi services, Nokia Chat refreshes the app with a modern interface, along with a number of other social aspects as seen in other messaging systems.

The beta software allows for person-to-person messaging between users of the service and Yahoo Messenger, regardless of platform used, according to the Nokia Beta Labs blog. Push notifications and Live Tile updates for new message alerts and adding contacts by scanning the phone's address book also appear in the revised version, along with location broadcasting and the sharing of locations listed in the Here mapping app. Users of Windows Phone 8 can also use voice recognition to write messages and perform commands in the app, and will also gain extra lock screen notifications.

The first countries able to use the new beta of Nokia Chat are the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, India, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Nigeria. More countries will be added in the future.
