updated 10:16 am EDT, Wed April 24, 2013

Wireless data revenues up 21 percent, 1.2M smartphone sales

Quarterly results from AT&T shows the company has managed to increase its year-on-year earnings by $100 million to $3.7 billion, matching the expectations of Wall Street. The financial information also tells that its consolidated revenues of $31.4 billion is down 1.5 percent compared to the same period last year.

Wireless data revenues have gone up 21 percent compared to last year, reaching $5.1 billion, with total wireless revenues and wireless service revenues increasing 3.4 percent to $16.7 billion and $15.1 billion respectively. Subscriber numbers increased by 296,000 in the quarter, partly thanks to another 1.2 million new smartphone subscribers forming 88 percent of postpaid phone sales.

Wireline revenues dipped 1.8-percent year-on-year to $14.7 billion, and also happens to be down 1.8-percent from the previous quarter. Wireline income at $1.6 billion is down 5.1 percent from the first quarter of 2012.

U-verse managed to pull in 31.5-percent more revenues compared to last year, a five-percent rise in sequential quarters. Total U-verse subscriber numbers reached 8.7 million in the quarter, an addition of 232,000 for U-verse TV and 731,000 for U-verse high-speed Internet. Subscribers of the U-verse Internet service now represent more than half of all wireline broadband subscribers for AT&T.
