FreedomPop expands 3G coverage, announces Overdrive Pro for Sprint

updated 01:13 pm EDT, Wed April 24, 2013

Ties to Sprint network may make service more useful

Mobile data provider FreedomPop has announced an expansion of its 3G coverage through support for Sprint. The change is effective immediately, and should enable nationwide access, solving some complaints about gaps in the carrier's service. The company sells cases and hotspots that enable otherwise Wi-Fi-only devices to get 3G/4G connections; each accessory comes with 500MB of free 4G data per month.

FreedomPop is now also accepting preorders for a Sprint-enabled Overdrive Pro hotspot. The peripheral supports up to five connected devices, and download speeds up to 8Mbps. On its own the hardware costs $40; 3G coverage requires paying at least $4 per month, and a plan with both 3G/4G coverage and a 2GB data cap is $20 per month.
