Study files mobile devices being used indoors as much as on-the-go

A new study by Filemaker has found that mobile devices are being used for building management and other "inside" enterprise jobs as much or more than they are employed "in the field" or on-the-go. Businesses -- the survey of 500 Filemaker Go customers found -- are "mobilizing" automated processes including web and remote-device admin, maintenance reports and connection to in-house servers more and more, allowing even workers who don't leave the building the freedom to do their jobs at or away from their desks.

The research revealed that Filemaker mobile users were connecting to on-premises services from over the local wireless network 59 percent of the time -- meaning workers were using the mobile device to do jobs previously done at a desk or at least elsewhere in the building or on the campus. Internet connections to company servers (35 percent) and VPN connections (21 percent) made up the balance, with results adding up to over 100 due to some companies encouraging multiple methods of connecting. The survey found that contact and customer management was the number one use of in-house mobile deployment, and half of the conversions to mobile apps centered around reducing paperwork.

Radio Shack to debut Galaxy S4 on Saturday

Electronics chain and cell phone reseller Radio Shack will begin offering the Samsung Galaxy S4, its latest flagship smartphone, beginning Saturday April 27. The company will also have a selection of S4 accessories, and is running a promotion where a $300 or more purchase will qualify the buyer for a $10 coupon. Radio Shack is continuing its Trade & Save trade-in program for older smartphones, the value of which can be credited to the S4, its accessories or any other model sold by the company. The Galaxy S4 includes a larger screen, faster processors and new features such as a dual-camera mode and Air View, which allows user to swipe above the phone to advance pictures. While initial reviews have been mixed, most agree that the Galaxy S4 continues the path set by the Galaxy S III, which is still available and became Samsung's top-selling smartphone.

Zendock for MacBook Pro, Retina MBP doubles Kickstarter goal

The Zendock, a multi-connector dock that supports Thunderbolt ports on the Retina MacBook Pros or the convention array of ports on the non-Retina and previous unibody model MBPs, has achieved over $80,000 in Kickstarter pledges to bring it to market -- double its original goal. The docking solution features matching a matching aluminum unibody composition and elegant design that perfectly complements the MacBook Pros, extra ports and a two-part system that allows the additional ports to be mounted on the back or under a desk, reducing wire clutter.

The Zendock Pro, which works with non-Retina unibody MBP models, adds separate audio in and out ports (USB-based and not included on some models), three USB 3.0 (or USB 2.0 compatible for older models) ports, and leaves one USB port, the SD card slot and the analog/digital audio port on the left side of the device available. The Retina version covers all but the analog/digital audio port, and adds a Thunderbolt passthrough on the dock itself along with a Mini DisplayPort, three USB 3.0 ports and separate digial speaker and mic ports. On both versions, the Magsafe power cord is incorporated into the cable connecting the two parts of the dock. The Zenbook docks are expected to retail for $179 and expected to begin shipping in October. The company currently has "stretch goals" that include color options and custom engraving if the goals are met.
