Geeksphone Keon, Peak Firefox OS developer preview devices out now

The first Firefox OS developer preview handsets are now shipping, starting at 119 euros for the entry-level model and 194 euros for a more fully specified device. Although the devices are aimed at developers, anyone can put down the cash for the new smartphones for shipment to a number of different countries, plus postage costs. The first devices to go on sale are the Keon and the Peak, both made by Geeksphone of Spain and feature mobile apps developed in HTML5.

The entry-level Keon handset centers on a 3.5-inch display and is powered by a single-core Snapdragon S1 processor clocked at 1GHz. It also incorporates a 3-megapixel rear camera and a 1580mAh battery. The more expensive of the two, the Peak, centers on a qHD 4.3-inch display and is powered by a more powerful Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz.

With its Firefox OS, Mozilla says that it is trying to create a truly open platform by building the OS entirely from HTML5 code and other open Web standards. Although Mozilla has created its own marketplace for apps, it is not attempting to lock out other app stores or ways for developers to get their apps on the platform. The Firefox OS is also being aimed at developing countries, although a number of high profile telcos are onboard to help push the new devices including Telefonica, Sprint, KDDI, T-Mobile, Singtel and China Unicom. Hardware partners also include LG, ZTE, Qualcomm and Alcatel OneTouch. [via Engadget]
