Schmidt: Google Glass for public roughly one year away

updated 03:50 pm EDT, Mon April 22, 2013

Wearers of Glass need to learn, create new social etiquette rules

A release of Google Glass for the general public may take place early next year. Executive chairman Eric Schmidt suggested that the version of Glass that will be provided to customers is "probably a year-ish away," which could give time for developers to create applications using the now-shipping Explorer edition.

In an interview with BBC Radio 4, Schmidt said there would be "thousands" of Glass units that will be used by developers, "and then based on their feedback, we'll make some product changes, and it's probably a year-ish away." Aside from issuing a number of people Glass as part of its social media competition earlier this year, this means that Google will miss out on its earlier claim of a "fully-polished" version released by the end of the year for under $1,500.

The interview also touched on privacy issues, which Schmidt accepts. He believes a new "social etiquette" will be required for Glass and other bodywear devices, something he states is a problem apparent by the use of mobile phones. Though Google has responsibilities for data recorded by Glass, Schmidt believes some of the responsibility lands on the user, in knowing where it is permitted or unacceptable to use the device.
