Report: Facebook chooses Altoona, IA for 'Catapult' data center

updated 07:14 pm EDT, Mon April 22, 2013

Third Facebook center likely to also use 'green' technology

According to sources inside the Iowa state government and a report in the Des Moines Register, the Iowa Economic Development Authority Board and Altoona's City Council are evaluating incentives for a rumored Facebook data center in the area, called "Catapult." If built, the company will join a LightEdge data center built in 2006, and a new one by Enseva scheduled to begin construction soon.

Proponents of the program point to the existing fiber optic data system, adequate power and water, open and affordable land with low natural disaster risks, and ready access to interstate highway travel as perks for the location being used as a data center.

The project is scheduled to be completed in a trio of $500 million build-outs on a 1.4 million square foot facility. The final cost of the project is anticipated to be $1.5 billion. When completed, the center would join data centers for the social network in Forest City, NC, and Prineville, Oregon.
