Six Yahoo properties axed as part of refocusing drive
Yahoo has shuttered a number of services, in its continued efforts to remove underperforming products and shift its focus towards more profitable areas. A company blog post signed by Jay Rossiter, executive vice president for platforms at Yahoo, states that local event calendar service Upcoming, Yahoo Deals, SMS Alerts, the Yahoo Mail and Messenger apps for feature phones using J2ME, and Yahoo Kids, formerly known as Yahooligans, will be closed down.
For many of the services, Yahoo has provided ways for users to save their content, or in a few, how to move on to more modern versions of its content. For example, while Mail and Messenger will cease, users are encouraged to use the mobile web version, or to use versions of the apps made for smartphones.
Users of the older versions of Yahoo Mail and Mail Classic will no longer be able to use them from the week beginning June 3rd. The new version of Yahoo Mail is touted as a suitable replacement, though for users on slower connections or older browsers will have access to a HTML-only or basic version of the new service.
The closure of services follows more bad news from Yahoo, in the form of disappointing quarterly results. Net revenues reached $1.07 billion, under analyst estimates of $1.1 billion, with the falling revenues being a symptom of the company's dropping advertising revenues. Despite the poor results, CEO Marissa Mayer was still pleased, claiming there to be more stability in the business, along with a strengthened team and promises to create well-designed products for its users in the future.
