Leak: Google creating Play framework for multiplayer games?

updated 04:04 pm EDT, Thu April 18, 2013

Files found within Google Glass app include multiplayer features

Google may be creating its own gaming platform, according to a report. The MyGlass companion app for Google Glass was found to contain a folder labeled "games" that held a number of files relating to various game-related functionality, something that the search giant could allow developers to implement for all apps downloadable through play, not just for Glass.

The files found by Android Police mentions processes for real-time multiplayer games, turn-based functions, in-game chat services, achievements, leaderboards, invitations, and multiplayer game lobbies. Though the files just handle how Glass would deal with game-specific information, the main processing would be done on a separate, central server.

If implemented across the Android ecosystem and not only for Glass, a gaming system for Google Play would certainly help developers in adding multiplayer to their titles. Currently, developers have to create their own matchmaking and multiplayer solutions, with the revealed Google solution seemingly more than capable of providing it instead.

The found files and inferred features mirrors that of other gaming services, such as those used by Microsoft for Xbox Live, Sony with the PlayStation Network, and to a lesser extent, Nintendo.
