Amazon expanding Android Appstore reach in coming months

updated 07:10 am EDT, Wed April 17, 2013

Nearly 200 countries will be able to buy apps from Amazon

Amazon is looking to expand its Appstore for Android into nearly 200 countries in the next few months. The retailer has announced that app developers will be able to submit their products to the store for distribution in the new locations, with those registered for international distribution becoming automatically available to download in countries as the store expands.

The Appstore will open up in areas including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, India, South Africa, Papua New Guinea, and Vatican City, and is already available in the United States, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Japan. Customers in new Appstore areas will be able to use it on Android tablets and phones, though the Kindle Fire line of tablets is still in a limited number of markets in comparison.

In recent months, Amazon introduced a test-drive feature for users to try out apps before buying, as well as a virtual currency, to the Kindle Fire tablet and the Appstore. Amazon Coins work in a similar way to other virtual currencies, by allowing customers to buy Coins in their local currency for use on in-app purchases or for applications themselves. A virtual currency helps even out the pricing of apps across multiple markets, simplifying income for developers, though a similar system by Facebook was dropped in favor of purchases using local currencies instead.
