Google Fiber in Provo, Utah hinging on city council vote

Google would modernize existing deployment, fulfill original iProvo goal

An update on the official Google Fiber website has revealed that the search engine is attempting to expand into Provo, UT. While the deal is not yet finalized, Google has said that it will "commit to upgrade the network to gigabit technology and finish network construction so that every home along the existing iProvo network would have the opportunity to connect to Google Fiber."

The City Council vote on the proposal is scheduled for April 23. If approved, Google would deploy service to the first customers later this year. The existing network was built more than a decade ago, and Google wants to bring the network up to modern standards. A similar deployment to Kansas City is intended, with a "free" tier (with a $30 activation charge) as well as a higher speed offerings for a monthly charge.

Industry evangelist Gig.U issued a statement about the announcement, congratulating Google for the proposal, and said that "this effort will pay enormous dividends for the country, helping develop the human capital America needs to lead a global economy that increasingly creates value with big data and big bandwidth."

Yippee for us. I get to move from 60/60 to 1000/1000 for about the same price (hopefully).
