Rumor: Next iPhone to have improved 12MP rear-facing camera

updated 03:00 am EDT, Tue April 16, 2013

Better 'HDR' photography, low-light photos, aperture

A new report from Vietnam claims that a Saigon company will be making the new camera module for the "iPhone 5S" rumored to appear sometime this summer, and that it will be much improved from the well-regarded 8MP module found in the iPhone 4S and 5. The new camera is said by the site -- which has proven itself accurate in the past -- to boost the resolution to 12 megapixels, and feature a large f/2.4 fixed aperture and backside illuminated sensor for better low-light shooting.

The camera is also said to be able to process high-dynamic-range, or HDR, pictures within the hardware rather than relying on only software to do so. claims that a company called Wonderful Saigon Electrics will be making the new module for Apple. An improved camera could be a clue that the "iPhone 5S" will retain the same form factor, as a new camera could be seen as a major reason to upgrade if the "5S" doesn't feature a different external design.

Apple has traditionally released a "refined" version of a given iPhone model about a year after the initial version, starting with the 3GS. In each, the camera system has been improved over the previous "S" model -- making it likely that it will be again for the "iPhone 5S."

The iPhone 5's camera is essentially the same as that in the 4S, with the addition of a "sapphire glass" lens cover to prevent scratching, and some processor improvements. Apple is also said to be trying to address the "purple fringing" issue that occurs often in all cameraphones and some cameras, given their short focal length.

black with clear aluminum case ? an option I'd like to see, given the scratching and wear already apparent on so many i5 I see in use...
