Confirmed: music service We Are Hunted procured by Twitter

updated 08:51 pm EDT, Thu April 11, 2013

Developers already at work on music-related projects at Twitter

In a confirmation of earlier reports, Twitter admitted it has acquired music social discovery site We Are Hunted. The main page of We Are Hunted gives thanks to staff and investors, and promises to "continue to create services that will delight you, as part of the Twitter team." No clear plan has been announced for the service's future on the microblogging platform.

The company's apps are still available on the iOS App Store for now, but the homepage notes that all accounts will be erased, so the functionality of the apps going forward is in significant doubt. The service originally generated a popularity-based chart, similar to Billboard, for online music that constantly monitored blogs, social media, BitTorrent, and other Internet sources for rankings.

According to the CNet report in March, ex-We Are Hunted employees have been using the #NowPlaying hashtag on Twitter to test a new service. CNet says of the app that "artists and songs are displayed in an elegant grid design. Tapping on the tile for an artist causes the tile to expand, showing a short biography along with links to any music the artist has stored on SoundCloud, or to song previews from the iTunes store. Users then tap a 'play' button to start streaming the music."
