Panasonic reveals Lumix GF6 Micro Four Thirds camera

updated 05:16 am EDT, Tue April 9, 2013

Previously leaked camera includes Wi-Fi, NFC

Panasonic has formally unveiled the Lumix GF6 Micro Four Thirds camera. As previously leaked, the new Lumix GF6 offers a number of improvements over the GF5 from last year, including the introduction of Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity, alongside an upgrade from the GF5's 12.1-megapixel sensor to a 16-megapixel Live MOS version.

Capable of recording AVCHD video at 1080i at 60 frames per second, the GF6 boots within half a second, can focus in low light, and can share files with smartphones and tablets over NFC. Remote shooting is also possible from a mobile device, using Panasonic's free app to view a 30fps live feed from the camera, adjust a number of settings, and instantly receive shots as they are taken. Images can be transferred to a PC automatically over Wi-Fi, while using the Lumix Club cloud service will allow automatic uploads of images and footage to Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, and YouTube.

The Venus image processing engine has been made with the GF6 in mind, for higher sensitivity while minimizing noise. The combination of Venus and the Live MOS Sensor allows for ISOs of 3,200 in Auto and 25,600 when extended. A new self-shot mode allows for the camera to be used at arm's reach, when used with the vertically-flippable rear touchscreen display, while 14 camera filters and effects, panorama mode, and stop motion animation functions have also been included.

It is believed that Panasonic will ship the camera later this month, and though a price has yet to be revealed for the Lumix GF6, it is expected to sell for around $680 when accompanied by a 14-22mm kit lens.
