Google Play Store redesign goes live, uses Google Now style

updated 12:13 pm EDT, Tue April 9, 2013

Lighter Play appearance, streamlined payments

Google has updated its app store with a new visual style, and is rolling it out to Android tablets and smartphones from today. Previously leaked by a YouTube employee, the fourth generation of the Google Play Store uses cards reminiscent of Google Now's own, as well as a clearer layout for easier navigation, with products being displayed with much larger images than before.

The store is much lighter overall compared to previous iterations, using light grays instead of the darker colors seen before. An official Android blog post by Google Play product manager Michael Siliski notes "Similarly themed content is grouped together so you can hone in on a magazine to read or an app to try." Scrolling down the page generates new product recommendations based on previously used items, while content purchasing has been simplified.

Android devices running version 2.2, Froyo, or later will be able to use the new store, which will be rolled out to various markets and devices over the next few weeks.
