Existing Boxee Box used for new tier, monthly fee for unlimited playback
Boxee has unveiled a new free offering for its cloud-based digital video recorder. A rebranded Boxee TV, now called the Boxee Cloud DVR, provides five hours of DVR playback per month on a new free plan for users of the hardware. Unlimited, indefinite storage remains available for purchasers of a paid tier.
The initial rollout remains limited to eight major metropolitan areas, including Washington DC, New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Los Angeles, though some suburbs are included with the associated metro area. Boxee hopes to expand to over 20 areas for the DVR functionality by the end of the year. Recording is limited to channels able to be received over-the-air by the Boxee Cloud DVR through either the included antenna or a more powerful antenna provided at the user's expense.
As before, the device streams Netflix, Vudu, YouTube, Pandora, MLB.TV, and Spotify content, with applicable subscriptions. The unlimited "all-access" Cloud DVR plan is available for $10 per month. The Boxee Cloud DVR set top box remains available for $99.
