HBO updates Go app, adds background AirPlay support

updated 10:52 pm EDT, Mon April 8, 2013

Includes new interactive features for 'Game of Thrones'

Home Box Office has updated its HBO Go app to version 2.1, adding background AirPlay streaming that lets users pass video onto TVs and other devices using AirPlay while making the mobile device free to run other applications. The update adds general performance enhancements as well as some additional interactivity for Game of Thrones watchers: while the episode is streaming to another device, users can see additional content (mostly text- and photo-based) on their iPad, iPhone or iPod touch.

The program is a free download from the App Store, but requires a cable subscription to HBO in order to access the content. HBO creates many hours of original content per year, including other highly-regarded series (past and present), original comedy specials, movies, sports events, concerts and documentaries that are not seen elsewhere or only syndicated to commercial stations later (and usually edited, as HBO series often feature content that goes beyond what network or basic-cable stations are allowed to show in the US).

HBO Go and the companion app Max Go (for the Cinemax service) added AirPlay streaming last month with new versions of the apps. The services also feature cable premieres of Hollywood films and other movies.
