Competitors battle for prepaid accounts

Virgin Mobile has kicked off a marketing campaign that is aimed at current T-Mobile prepaid customers. As part of its "retrain your brain" promotion, Virgin is offering $100 in unlimited-plan credit for customers who switch their phone number from a T-Mobile account.

A chart outlining plan features and device costs suggests Virgin Mobile customers will save a total of $334 over the course of two years, including the $100 credit, if they were to purchase a Galaxy S II and sign up for unlimited data (2.5GB before throttling), messaging and talk service.

Sprint earlier this month announced that it had increased its customer base for the first time in approximately four years, before launching its new "UnCarrier" contract-free plans in the US. The company is days away from offering the iPhone 5, with prices starting at $580, while Virgin is currently limited to the iPhone 4S for $450, and both companies offer a wide range of Android devices.

Virgin will continue its $100 promotion through the end of May.
