Event may hint at Austin becoming next city with Google Fiber

updated 05:37 pm EDT, Fri April 5, 2013

City was in close competition for initial rollout

Austin, Texas could be the next city to get Google Fiber, an upcoming meeting suggests. Google and the City of Austin are holding an event on April 9th, and city sources tell GigaOM that they suspect it's related to broadband. "You are a leader here in Austin," a leaked invitation reads. "Every day, your work and contributions help make our community better and stronger. That's why we want you to be one of the first to hear about something new coming to Austin. Please join Google and the City of Austin for an announcement on Tuesday."

While the invitation could relate to other projects, Google has talked about deploying Fiber outside the Kansas City area. Austin is also an extremely tech-heavy city in which the company already has a presence, and it's believed to have been one of the frontrunners in the initial competition to host Fiber.

The service offers gigabit Internet access, something still extremely rare in North America. The main challenge is infrastructure, as many cities lack the fiber optic cables needed to support those speeds. A deployment in Austin would need cooperation and/or concessions from the City to accommodate construction, which might for instance include stringing cables along telephone poles.
